Court Verdict on Iddat Case
ISLAMABAD: On Thursday, a district and sessions court in Islamabad dismissed the pleas of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi to suspend their sentences in the iddat case. This development, reported by ARY News, came after Additional District and Sessions Judge (ADSJ) Afzal Majoka announced the verdict that had been reserved earlier this week.
Islamabad High Court’s Directive
Earlier this month, the Islamabad High Court (IHC) had directed the session court to deliver its verdict on Bushra Bibi’s plea within ten days. The plea sought suspension of her conviction in the Nikah case, where both Bushra Bibi and Imran Khan were sentenced to seven years in jail and fined Rs500,000 each.
PTI’s Response to Iddat Case Verdict
The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party has expressed its intention to challenge the court’s decision. Omar Ayub Khan, the Leader of the Opposition in the National Assembly, stated that the party reserves the right to appeal against the verdict. “We will move to court against the dismissal of the pleas,” Ayub declared in a statement to the press.
The Marriage Controversy
The controversy surrounding the iddat case stems from the marriage of Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi in February 2018. The ceremony, held in Lahore, a private affair attended by close relatives and friends, excluding the PTI founder’s sisters. Mufti Saeed officiated the nikah, with former PTI leader Awn Chaudhary and former Special Assistant to the Prime Minister (SAPM) Zulfi Bukhari as witnesses.
Last year, Khawar Maneka, Bushra Bibi’s former husband, filed a complaint alleging that the marriage occurred within the three-month “iddat period” following their divorce, which he claimed was illegal and against Sharia law. This led to the court case where Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi accused of engaging in an “un-Islamic” marriage.
Sentencing in the Iddat Case
In February this year, the court sentenced Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi to seven years in prison and imposed a Rs500,000 fine on each of them in the iddat case. The conviction has been a significant legal challenge for the PTI founder and his wife, who continue to contest the charges.
The iddat case remains a focal point of legal and public interest, with implications for the political landscape and the individuals involved.
