Karachi Power Supply May be Cut off:
During a meeting of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) on Wednesday, the Secretary of Power expressed concern over the potential discontinuation of power supply to Karachi unless the federal government provides subsidy payments to K-Electric. He emphasized that the government typically grants a subsidy of PKR 10 – 20 per unit to maintain a tax differential, but a substantial amount of PKR 150 billion is still owed to K-Electric. While Shahid Khaqan Abbasi, a PML-N leader, is actively addressing the issue, the Secretary warned that electricity supply to Karachi could be disrupted until the outstanding payment is made.
Furthermore, Mushahid Hussain announced an expected increase of two hours in power outages nationwide. This decision was attributed to the inability of the Central Power Purchasing Agency to fulfill significant markup payments totaling approximately Rs 216 billion owed to independent power producers. Considering the prevailing inflation and the country’s poor economic conditions, it is anticipated that the nation will face an acute shortage of resources.
