Understanding Why Your Mobile Phone Gets Hot and How to Keep It Cool?
The current heatwave is not only impacting humans but also their electronic devices.
Unlike humans, electronic devices such as phones don’t perspire. While this is beneficial for those holding them, it poses a challenge for the devices themselves. So, why do our electronic devices heat up in high temperatures, and what can we do about it?
When a phone becomes hot, its processor slows down. Similar to how humans struggle to work efficiently in extreme heat, the phone’s processor can also face similar issues. The processor, which is responsible for essential functions, experiences a decrease in performance.
According to Dr. Rose Whitington, a senior lecturer in electronics and electrical engineering at Leeds Beckett University, electronic components generate heat as they operate. As the temperature rises, the phone’s processor attempts to prevent overheating, resulting in a slowdown of all functions.
Dr. Rose explains that electronic devices are typically designed to function within a temperature range of up to 35 degrees Celsius. She emphasizes that batteries, which store energy, have specific temperature requirements for optimal performance. As the temperature increases, the battery’s efficiency decreases, leading to faster energy depletion. Cooling down the battery becomes more challenging in such circumstances.
Moreover, Dr. Rose points out that when we are outdoors under the sun, we often increase the brightness of our screens, which contributes to faster battery drain. The increased energy consumption for screen brightness further adds to the phone’s heat generation.
Dr. Rose also highlights that heat can exacerbate minor issues in older phones. Additionally, screen protectors can trap heat internally, which is unfavorable in hot conditions. So, what measures can you take to keep your phone cool?
Avoid excessive charging:
Dr. Rose recommends limiting charging sessions, as charging generates additional heat when the device is already warm.
Shield from direct sunlight:
It is advisable to keep your mobile phone away from direct sunlight. Avoid leaving it inside a car and, whenever possible, place it in the shade. If available, position it in front of a fan for better airflow.
Reduce weight:
Both the internal and external surfaces of the phone should be kept lightweight. If you use a phone case, remove it, and disable unnecessary functions and features.
Dr. Rose suggests, “If you are not utilizing GPS or other features, turn them off. Minimizing usage reduces energy consumption and heat generation.”
Utilize low power mode:
By reducing power consumption, you can improve your phone’s performance. In case your phone is struggling with heat, consider turning it off for a few minutes to allow it to cool down before powering it back on. However, avoid extreme measures like placing it in the freezer or using ice packs, as these can cause damage.
Dr. Rose emphasizes that phones are equipped with mechanisms to handle temperature changes, but they have their limitations.
By following these precautions, you can help keep your phone cool and prevent overheating issues during a heatwave.
