In recent three years, five artificial glaciers built in Giligit-Baltistan to over come the effects of climate change. more over these glaciers will provide access to water to locals during summer season.
Villagers along with different universities helped in the constructions of these huge ice stupas. And also helped in glacier grafts which elevated at 4000 meters from sea level.
This procedure was the part Glacier Lake Outburst Flood Risk Reduction-GLOF-II project. This project was tackle by the ministry of climate change.
The University of Gilgit-Baltistan, WAFA Foundation, Karakoram International University Gilgit and local residents from Chundu village, Murko village in Nagar, Khuwardu village, Skardu and Hasnainabad helped to execute this project.
The experts and researchers in Gilgit decided to handle the unfavorable effects of climate change. Which led to the project of erecting artificial glaciers in the area.
Artificial glaciers have another use of collecting and freezing huge amount of water in winter months. So that local people can use in summer season.
According to reports, two glaciers created in Skardu and one in each city, Hasnainabad, Nagar and Khuwardu. Four glaciers among these are at the elevation of 4000 meters while others are above 3200 meters above sea level.
UNDP Pakistan’s official- Mehvish Bukhari said that UN agency will observe these on weekly basis to make sure that local residents of these have access to drinking water in dry season.
In recent years Pakistan faced worst climate changes and these artificial glaciers are one more step forward to reduce impacts of climate change in Pakistan.
