Mary Land: A US citizen has become first person in this world to get generically modified pig’s heart. For the first time in the world doctors of University of Maryland Medical School transplant a heart of pig (genetically modified) into a human.
David Bennett-57 years old man was facing life threatening heart disease has transplanted with genetically modified pig’s heart. It is really innovative technique which offers hope to thousands of heart failing patients.
It was first successful heart transplant of pig to human. This complex operation took eight hours in Baltimore on Friday. After transplant patient was doing well on Monday, according to doctors and surgeons at the University of Maryland Medical Center.
Dr. Bartley Griffith performed operation and reported that it create pulse, it creates pressure and it is heart. The patient is normal and it is working. We felt excitement but we are still confused that what will happen tomorrow. Because it does not happen before.
Heart transplant on Baby Fae and difference
In 1984 a heart transplant had done on Baby Fae. The Bay Fae implanted with a baboon’s heart but he can survive only for 21 days after operation.
But this is different case from past, the heart of donor pig genetically modified by Biotech Firm Revivicor. As certain type of sugar removed to avoid organ rejection. Only valves and skin of pig’s heart used in this transplant to avoid rejection issue.
It was a step forward surgery and brings us one step more closer to resolve the organ famine crisis,” said Bartley Griffith, one of the senior doctors who took part in transplanting the pig’s heart as reported by AFP.
