Now Going to Work on Your Flying Car No Longer a Dream:
An aeronautical engineer from Kitty Hawk, a small Silicon Valley business, recently piloted a flying automobile over a scenic lake about 100 miles north of San Francisco.
Although it’s difficult to classify this open-seated, 220-pound contraption powered by eight battery-powered propellers as a “car,” the vehicle represents the latest example of the technology sector disrupting traditional industries. While self-driving cars that use artificial intelligence have been in development for some time and are already present on the highways of some major cities, a dozen or more start-ups, including Kitty Hawk, are working to make flying cars a reality.
These start-ups are backed by influential figures such as Google co-founder Larry Page, major aerospace companies like Airbus and Uber, and even the government of Dubai. The Kitty Hawk Flyer, a prototype from the California-based start-up, is one of several such models currently in development. The company plans to attract enthusiasts and hobbyists to the Flyer, and has created a program that allows members to gain exclusive access to experiences and demonstrations in exchange for a $100 deposit towards a $2,000 discount on the retail price of a Flyer.
