Nasiruddin Shah Says It has Become Fashionable to Hate Muslims in India:
During an interview, veteran Bollywood actor Naseeruddin Shah expressed his concern about the rise of hatred against Muslims in India, particularly propagated by the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He criticized the party for cleverly exploiting this trend of hatred, labeling it as a troubling period. Shah highlighted that the current mood in Bollywood films reflects the real-world events, indicating a significant presence of Islamophobia. According to him, hating Muslims has become fashionable in India, even among educated individuals, thanks to the BJP’s manipulation of public sentiment.
Shah questioned the inclusion of religion in every aspect of Indian society, despite the country’s secular and democratic nature. He criticized the Election Commission for remaining silent on politicians who exploit religious sentiments for electoral gains, while a Muslim leader simply uttering “Allahu Akbar” during a campaign would spark riots. However, Shah expressed hope that the hatred against Muslims and the use of religion for political purposes would eventually decline, although he acknowledged the current high prevalence of such tactics, crediting the BJP’s clever strategy.
The renowned actor also commented on the Hindi film industry, stating that it has not been proactive in addressing challenges and societal issues. He questioned whether a film would be made about wrestlers protesting in the nation’s capital, implying the industry’s reluctance to tackle politically sensitive topics.
Naseeruddin Shah, known for his outspoken criticism of the BJP government, highlighted the climate of hatred in the country and the resulting fear it generates, not only within the film industry but also across all levels of society. He mentioned the recent arrest of Shah Rukh Khan’s son Aryan in a drug case as an example, suggesting that it served as a warning to the industry about the potential consequences of speaking out against the government.
Shah emphasized that he is not afraid to voice his opinions but rather fears for the future of the country. He expressed his concern about India’s regressive trajectory, describing it as a terrifying situation.
