Punjab’s Education Sector Receives Boost with Announcement of 30,000 Teaching Jobs
In a move to address the critical shortage of teaching staff, the Punjab government has unveiled plans to recruit 30,000 visiting teachers for schools in the initial phase of its initiative.
The School Education Department (SED) in the province has been grappling with a deficit of 115,000 teachers, dating back to the last major recruitment in 2018 under the PML-N government.
During the tenure of the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), around 400 to 500 appointments were made, primarily focusing on two districts: Murree and Mianwali. The PTI government streamlined the hiring process, mirroring the Punjab Public Service Commission (PPSC) procedures.
Additionally, the PTI administration introduced the College Teaching Interns (CTIs) program to address staffing gaps in colleges. This initiative, which offered recent graduates monthly salaries of Rs25,000, was well received.
Sources within the SED reveal that the current government is contemplating the recruitment of 30,000 schoolteachers on a visiting basis. These teachers will be compensated based on the number of lectures they deliver.
To support this initiative, the government intends to allocate supplementary funds to school councils to cover the visiting teachers’ salaries. Moreover, the councils will be tasked with generating additional funds to address various school expenses.
Rana Liaqat, General Secretary of the Punjab Teachers Union (PTU), advocates for permanent recruitment in the education sector to resolve the longstanding shortage of teachers. He emphasizes that recruiting teachers on a permanent basis is the most effective solution.
Expressing concerns, Liaqat highlights the potential challenges that hiring visiting teachers may pose for schools, underlining the importance of a sustainable, permanent solution.
With this announcement, Punjab aims to not only bridge the gap in teaching staff but also to enhance the quality of education across the province.
In conclusion, Punjab’s initiative to fill 30,000 teaching jobs marks a crucial step towards addressing educational gaps and fostering a brighter future for students and educators alike.
