Embracing Solar Shadows: A Clock that Reflects Time through Sun’s Position:
There is a circulating image on social media that often mistaken for a regular clock, but in reality, it is a digital sundial. Unlike conventional sundials, this type utilizes the sun’s shadow to display the time. Digital sundials exclusively function during daylight hours, typically from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM, and necessitate adjustments based on their geographical location. It is essential to recognize that sundial time and conventional clock time differ because sundials rely on the varying movement of the sun, which influenced by the Earth’s orbit and tilted axis.
Upon conducting an online search of the photo, a similar image discovered on a website, where it identified as a 3D printed digital sundial. Further exploration revealed that these sundials are available for purchase in various sizes and colors. It is noteworthy that digital sundials typically operate in 20-minute intervals and require calibration based on the latitude of their placement. Online videos are available that demonstrate the functionality of these digital sundials.
Sundials, including digital sundials, are among the earliest methods of timekeeping. Traditional sundials rely on the position of the sun to indicate the hour, often using a line or triangle. In contrast, digital sundials employ specially designed objects shaped like numbers, which cast shadows representing the current time. These devices operate without the need for electricity and lack moving components. The sundial’s shape precisely calculated to allow only the appropriate sunrays to pass through at the correct time and angle.
