In Every Month Oil Worth Rs. 12 Billion Being Smuggled into Pakistan :
A meeting held at Parliament House by the Senate Standing Committee on Finance, chaired by Senator Saleem Mandviwalla, where it was disclose that smugglers are illegally importing 25-30 million liters of oil into Pakistan daily.
These smugglers allegedly earn approximately Rs. 10-12 billion per month by carrying out smuggling operations in at least five districts of Balochistan. Members of the committee expressed concern about the harassment of businesses and discussed the recent raids on traders in Karachi and Lahore. They also criticized the under-reporting of goods by traders and the lack of legal cases filed against them.
The Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR), Asim Ahmad, denied reports of harassment against Pashtun businessmen and mentioned that the anti-smuggling operations have led to the confiscation of numerous items at Karachi’s Bolton Market. Senator Farooq Naek raised the issue of smuggling US Dollars to Afghanistan, while another member called for more rigorous management of cross-border channels to regulate the flow of goods.
Acknowledging the rampant smuggling in the country, the Minister of State for Finance, Aisha Ghaus Pasha, highlighted the steps taken by the Prime Minister to counter it. The committee also deliberated on the tax evasion notices sent to business persons and informed that the Tax Tribunal had prioritized closing the matter.
