A tragic incident took place in Odisha, India, resulting in the deadliest railway accident the country has witnessed in over a decade. Government officials report that a collision between two passenger trains claimed the lives of at least 288 people and left approximately 900 others injured.
Authorities express concerns that the death toll may rise further. Sudhanshu Sarangi, the director general of the fire department in Odisha, has confirmed the recovery of 207 bodies so far. Distressing images from the scene depict rescue workers searching the wreckage for survivors, while videos circulated on social media capture the arrival of ambulances and the rescue of individuals from overturned train carriages.
Eyewitnesses describe a devastating scene characterized by blood, broken limbs, and distressed people. In a display of solidarity, hundreds of young individuals formed queues outside a government hospital in Odisha to donate blood.
Rescue teams from Bhubaneswar in Odisha and Kolkata in West Bengal have been deployed, as stated by Ashwini Vaishnaw, the federal Minister for Railways. The National Disaster Response Force has dispatched three teams to the accident site, with six additional teams being mobilized.
The collision occurred around 7 pm local time when the Howrah Superfast Express, traveling from Bangalore to Howrah, derailed and collided with the Coromandel Express, which was en route from Kolkata to Chennai.
Authorities prioritize the transfer of injured individuals to hospitals, as emphasized by Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik. Rescue operations are currently underway, and Prime Minister Narendra Modi has conveyed his condolences, assuring that all possible assistance will be provided to those affected.
