Kenya Hunger Cult Deaths Reach 89:
According to Interior Minister Kithure Kindiki, the death toll of members of a Kenyan cult who believed that they would go to heaven if they starved themselves has increased to 89. The Good News International Church, located in the Shakahola forest in eastern Kenya, was the site of numerous mass graves, which have been recently discover.
Most of the victims found buried in shallow graves. While a small number discovered emaciated but still alive, but later died. The exhumation sites have been secure, and teams of workers, some wearing protective gear, have been removing the bodies in blue and white body bags. Videos have shown footage of mud huts with thatched roofs scattered among thorn trees and bushes. Three more individuals have been rescued alive, bringing the total number of survivors to 34. Kindiki has called for the cult’s leader, Paul Mackenzie, and anyone who assisted him in burying the victims to face the harshest penalties under the law.
Mackenzie arrested on April 14th, and 14 cult members are currently in custody. The government is treating this event as a turning point in the threat posed by religious extremism.
