Pakistanis Lost Rs. 25 Billion in Mobile App Scam:
Thousands of Pakistanis are said to have fallen victim to an alleged online investment scam perpetrated by an app called JawaEye, which claimed to be based in Indonesia. The losses are estimated to amount to as much as Rs. 25 billion, with the app reportedly running a Ponzi scheme that enticed unwitting users with promises of high returns.
Although the app was available on Google Play, it primarily operated through its website, which required users to invest a minimum of Rs. 15,000 as a sign-up fee. The Google Play version of the app was likely intended to inspire confidence among potential customers, but its description was suspicious, claiming that it was a popular film and television platform used in 106 countries, among other things.
A cached version of the Google Play page for the app revealed this deception. The app was also promoted through numerous YouTube videos with millions of views collectively, which portrayed it as a legitimate means of earning money. Furthermore, several Facebook groups were created to entice people into signing up for the app.
