Pakistan’s Parliament House, a symbol of the country’s democratic process, has undergone significant renovations in recent years. The Ministry of Interior revealed that over Parliament House renovation projects costing over Rs. 927 million have been completed in the past five years.
The breakdown of the renovation expenditures shows a steady rise: Rs 108 million in 2019-20, Rs 171 million in 2020-21, Rs 286 million in 2021-22, Rs 302 million in 2022-23, and Rs 60 million spent so far in 2023-24. These renovations aim to modernize and maintain the functionality of this crucial government building.
However, the financial commitment to Pakistan’s Parliament House extends beyond renovations. In 2022, an additional Rs. 5 billion allocated for the fiscal year 2022-23. This significant increase encompassed not only Parliament House renovation costs but also salaries, allowances, and other operational expenses for both the Upper House (Senate) and the Lower House (National Assembly). This demonstrates the government’s prioritization of a well-functioning Parliament.
Beyond renovations and increased funding, efforts are underway to enhance the Parliament House’s symbolic value. A parliamentary committee formed in 2023 to explore renaming the building. This initiative seeks a name that better reflects Pakistan’s rich cultural heritage and national unity.
The focus on Parliament House renovation, budget allocation, and potential renaming signifies the importance placed on this institution. These actions ensure the Parliament House remains a well-maintained and functional space for Pakistan’s legislative activities, while also strengthening its role as a symbol of national identity and unity.
