This Family of Banu Shayba -Caretaker of The Holy Kaa’ba From The Time of Hazrat Muhammad SAW:
The guardianship of the Kaaba has been held by the descendants of Shaybah since the time of Prophet Muhammad, who designated them as the caretakers after the conquest of Mecca in the eighth year of the Hijra. The Prophet gave Uthman Ibn Abi Talha the key to the city and stated that the responsibility for maintaining the Kaaba had been bestowed upon the line of Shaybah’s sons for eternity. The Prophet further added that this responsibility would only be taken away from them by an unjust and oppressive tyrant. This is why the sons of Shaybah have continued to be the caretakers of the Kaaba to this day.
The duties of the caretaker are limited to opening and closing the Kaaba. In case of state visitors, the Royal Court, the Ministry of the Interior, and the emergency services join forces with the caretaker. The Kaaba is cleaned every year on the fifteenth of Muharram. After the Royal Order has been issued, the Emirate of Mecca consults with the caretaker regarding the formal arrangements for cleaning the Kaaba. Due to the current construction work and the level of traffic, the cleaning of the Kaaba on Shaaben one has been postponed.
