World’s Highest ATM is 15,397 Feet Above Sea Level, Installed at Khunjerab Pass in Pakistan:
Pakistan’s Khunjerab Pass Boasts World’s Highest ATM at 15,397 Feet Above Sea Level The National Bank of Pakistan proudly claims the title for the world’s highest ATM, situated at the renowned Khunjerab Pass. Nestled amidst the snow-capped peaks of the Karakoram Mountains, this extraordinary ATM stands tall at an astonishing altitude of 15,397 feet. The pass itself straddles the border between Pakistan’s Gilgit–Baltistan Hunza–Nagar District and China’s Xinjiang region. The installation and maintenance of this unique banking facility at such an extreme height presented significant challenges for the bank. Ovais Asad Khan, Divisional Head of Strategic Marketing Division, expressed deep gratitude to the local team,
Pakistan Army, and local authorities for their invaluable support throughout the process. In order to ascertain the required height for the ATM, the bank consulted the Guinness Book of World Records. Demonstrating their commitment to environmental sustainability, the ATM is powered by renewable energy sources, namely solar power and a wind turbine, allowing it to operate seamlessly around the clock.
While serving the needs of tourists who often require cash withdrawals, this ATM has also become a beloved local landmark. Positioned on the main highway and serving as the starting point of the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), it holds immense significance for the surrounding community. Although some visitors view it as an intriguing novelty, like Sheharzad Kaleem who regarded it as a marketing gimmick, others question its necessity considering the presence of other ATMs in the nearby town of Sost. In addition to cash withdrawal services, the ATM also offers bill payment and fund transfer facilities.
Special precautions taken to ensure uninterrupted operation during the harsh winter months when temperatures plummet below freezing. The nearby branch in Sost city diligently monitors the ATM 24/7 to guarantee the availability of cash. Previously, the highest ATM in the world situated in India at Nathu-La, a mountain pass on the Silk Route, installed by Union Bank of India back in 2007, standing at an altitude of approximately 14,300 feet.
