Meta -Facebook sued for $3.2 billion in a class action lawsuit. As it claims that data of 44 million users in UK had exploited after signing up to Meta (a social network).
The case claimed that Meta has violated the 1998 Competition Act. As Meta has charged unfair price for Facebook users in UK when they got access to the service. The legal expert Dr Liza Lovdahl Gormsen has brought this lawsuit. It persuaded that the price for getting on Facebook, which does not charge its users. Instead it is handing over personal data that generates most of the company’s income.
In all over the world, Meta’s 98% source of income is advertisement. Advertisers target target specific demographics and consumers because the company has developed profiles of its users through their online activity.
Lovdahl Gormsen said that Meta is exploiting the personal data of its users without properly compensating them for taking their data. He claimed that Facebook has completely disproportionate relation with its users. I don’t think that when Facebook users click on the terms and conditions they are completely aware of how unfair this agreement is.
Compensation benefits for users
Lovdahl Gormsen is a competition law specialist at the British Institute of International and Comparative Law. She is bringing the class action at the Competition Appeal Tribunal in London as an opt-out case. This means that Facebook users do not need to be actively involved in this case to seek damages and will be part of this claim unless they decide to opt out. The lawsuit has duration from 1 October 2015 to 31 December 2019. The amount of compensation per user will settle by the judge If she win the sue.
