Shooting at School in Northwestern Pakistan – Several Teachers killed:
Officials reported that a shooting at a school in northwestern Pakistan on Thursday resulted in the deaths of at least seven teachers. This attack appeared to be in retaliation for another attack that occurred shortly before, in which another teacher shot dead. Both incidents occurred in the Parachinar area of Kurram tribal district, near the Afghanistan border.
Regional authorities provided conflicting accounts regarding the motive for the killings. A statement from the provincial chief minister’s office attributed it to a property dispute, while the regional commissioner stated that it was likely caused by sectarian antagonism.
According to the commissioner, the teacher killed in the first attack was a Sunni Muslim, while those shot in the school attack were Shi’ite Muslims. He added that it was unclear whether the second attack was in response to the first. The area is already tense due to sectarian violence, and security has been heightened. The tribal district has a majority Shi’ite population that is frequently targeted by Sunni militant groups affiliated with the local Taliban movement, as they consider Shi’ites to be heretics. The local police are currently gathering more information as they investigate the incidents.
