Aitchison College Principal Michael A Thomson tendered his resignation amidst a contentious scenario where the Punjab Governor, Balighur Rehman, allegedly instructed fee waivers for the sons of Federal Minister Ahad Cheema. Reports by Geo News unveiled Thomson’s protest against perceived preferential treatment, prompting his decision to step down from his role.
Thomson’s resignation, effective from April 1, came as a reaction to Governor Rehman’s directive to exempt the school fees for the Minister’s sons, following a request made by the Minister’s wife. Expressing his disappointment, Thomson asserted his commitment to upholding the institution’s reputation and extending assistance to those in need. However, he emphasized the distinction between genuine aid and policy manipulation for specific individuals’ benefit, contending that such actions compromise the college’s integrity.
Criticism directed towards the interference of the Governor House in the college’s affairs, leading to a breach in established protocols. Governor Rehman clarified that Minister Cheema’s children were relocated to Islamabad due to his posting, rendering them unable to attend Aitchison College. He explained that the fee waiver requested for the duration the children were absent from the institution. Additionally, an audit of Thomson’s salary, amounting to 4 million rupees, has been initiated.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar refuted claims against Cheema, stating that his sons had not attended Aitchison College for the past three years. Tarar clarified that according to regulations, if the children not enrolled, the family is not obligated to pay fees. He affirmed that the Cheema family adhered to proper procedures when submitting their application.
The controversy has ignited debates surrounding favoritism, interference in institutional policies, and concerns regarding governance and management at Aitchison College.
