The dream of free e-bikes for students in Punjab has hit a roadblock. The Lahore High Court (LHC) has temporarily halted the distribution program, citing concerns about safety and a lack of proper planning.
Justice Shahid Karim of the LHC raised questions about the government’s new bikes initiative during a hearing on reducing smog in Punjab. He expressed concerns about reckless behavior like one-wheeling and the potential for students to congregate around girls’ colleges with easy access to e-bikes.
The court has directed the government to develop a more comprehensive policy before resuming distribution. This policy should address safety concerns and ensure proper allocation of resources. Additionally, the LHC has requested a detailed report on the program’s logistics, including the number and distribution locations of the bikes.
Justice Karim proposed alternative solutions for student transportation, advocating for the implementation of electronic buses. These buses would promote a safer and more environmentally friendly mode of travel for students within Punjab.
The Punjab government, however, maintains its stance on the e-bikes for students program. Provincial Information Minister Azma Bokhari argues that distributing bikes falls under the executive’s purview. She dismisses concerns about misuse and emphasizes the government’s commitment to fulfilling its responsibilities.
This ongoing saga highlights the importance of careful planning and addressing safety concerns before implementing such initiatives. Whether the e-bikes for students program continues or takes a different form remains to be seen. Only time will tell if the government can address the court’s concerns and establish a safe and effective transportation solution for Punjab’s students.
