If you registered or transferred a vehicle and are still waiting for your smart card, you will want to know where it is. The honest answer is that no single, clearly documented public tool exists for checking smart card delivery status across Pakistan. This guide explains what is known for each area and the safest ways to find out.
What Is a Vehicle Smart Card?
The vehicle smart card replaced the old paper registration book. It was introduced to reduce fake registrations and forgery in transfers. In Sindh, for example, the card was described as having a chip that an electronic reader can scan to show the owner’s details, chassis and engine numbers and registration history. New vehicles get a card at registration, and existing owners can get one by re-registering.
Be Careful With “Smart Card Tracking” Websites
Searching for this topic brings up many websites with names like “MTMIS Punjab smart card tracking.” Many of these are private, unofficial sites, not the government. Do not enter your CNIC, vehicle number or any payment details on them. Use only official excise department websites and apps, and be careful with any site that asks you for money to “track” or “release” your card.
Islamabad: SMS Notice
A 2019 report said the Islamabad Excise and Taxation office sends the delivery status by SMS to the mobile number written on your registration or transfer form. The message says the card is ready, and you can collect it from the excise office during office hours. This depends on having given a working mobile number on your form, and the process may have changed since 2019. The official Islamabad excise website is islamabadexcise.gov.pk. The report also mentioned a smart card fee of Rs1,500 at that time, so confirm the current amount.
Punjab: Delivery by Pakistan Post
In Punjab, smart cards and number plates were reported in December 2021 to be delivered to owners’ doorsteps through Pakistan Post under an arrangement with the Excise and Taxation Department. The report said each card is tracked on a dashboard, but it did not say whether owners can view it. I could not find a clearly documented public status tool for Punjab. What you can do:
- Check your SMS and WhatsApp for any message from the excise department or Pakistan Post, and keep any tracking or article number.
- Contact your local Pakistan Post office with your tracking number, if you were given one.
- Visit or call your district excise and taxation office with your vehicle registration number, your CNIC and the receipt or slip you were given.
The official Punjab vehicle services portal, which I confirmed earlier for vehicle verification, is mtmis.excise.punjab.gov.pk. I could not open it to confirm whether it shows card delivery status, so check there for any tracking option, but do not assume one exists.
Sindh
The Sindh Excise and Taxation Department introduced smart cards in 2018. The reports I found do not describe a way to track a card. The department’s official site is excise.gos.pk. Contact the excise office where you applied.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
I did not find a documented smart card tracking process for KP. The official vehicle records page is kpexcise.gov.pk/mvrecords. For card status, contact your local excise office.
What If Your Card Is Delayed?
Delays have happened before. A January 2020 report said Punjab had large backlogs of smart cards and number plates, with owners who had paid all fees still waiting. That report is old, but the lesson still applies:
- Keep your slip and receipt. It shows you have applied and paid.
- Keep copies of your fee challan, your vehicle details and your CNIC.
- Ask the excise office in writing if the delay is long, and keep a copy of your complaint.
- Check that your mobile number and address are correct in the department’s records, since a wrong number or address can stop delivery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there an official online tool to track my smart card?
No clearly documented public tracker was found for all areas. Islamabad has been reported to use SMS notices, and Punjab uses Pakistan Post delivery.
Are websites offering “smart card tracking” safe?
Many are unofficial. Use only official excise department websites and do not share personal details on lookalike sites.
What should I do if my card has not arrived?
Contact your excise and taxation office with your vehicle number, CNIC and receipt, and ask Pakistan Post if you have a tracking number.
Can I drive while waiting for the card?
Keep your payment slip and registration papers with you. Reports from 2020 said some owners had vehicles impounded despite showing a slip, so ask the excise office what proof they will accept.
Will I get an SMS?
In Islamabad, reports said a status SMS goes to the number on your form. Make sure the number on your form is correct.
Until official tracking tools become widely available, the safest approach is to keep your receipts, use only official channels and follow up with your local excise office.
