In a recent revelation, the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC) has unveiled massive gas theft scheme operating within Karachi, amounting to a loss of millions in revenue.
The detection of this illicit operation transpired during a meticulously coordinated raid orchestrated by SSGC’s Central Revenue Department (CRD) and Central Gas Testing Organization (CGTO) in the vicinity of Gul Hasan Town, adjacent to Sabzi Mandi.
Upon thorough investigation, it emerged that the clandestine network had clandestinely siphoned gas to more than 2,500 households by illicitly tapping into the main service line. Swift action taken by the SSGC team, promptly disconnecting all 2,500 illegal connections, thereby effectively dismantling the operation.
According to SSGC’s assessments, the gas pilferers had been surreptitiously siphoning off a staggering 2,400,000 cubic meters of gas annually, amounting to an alarming sum of Rs 75,000,000.
SSGC has emphasized the criticality of gas as a national asset and has reaffirmed its staunch stance against any form of theft. The company has pledged to bolster its endeavors in combating gas theft and implementing penalties commensurate with the volume of stolen gas.
Earlier this month, the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) took action by dismantling an illegal pipeline spanning over 4,500 meters and disconnecting 440 unauthorized connections associated with it in the Lower Dir district.
A spokesperson from SNGPL disclosed that the illicit pipeline had been supplying gas to numerous villages, including Damamo, Awlia Banda, Bandagai, Tangi, Nakhtaro, Koto, and Shagai. Additionally, the spokesperson revealed that a total of 36 million cubic feet of gas was being unlawfully siphoned off.
