Punjabis, beware! A sweltering heatwave in Punjab is anticipated to grip the province starting May 12th. Environmental expert Dr. Zulfiqar predicts scorching temperatures exceeding 40°C, mirroring the current extreme heat in Sindh.
Dr. Zulfiqar advises residents to minimize outdoor activity and prioritize staying indoors to prevent heatstroke. He also recommends keeping water in wide containers to maintain humidity within homes.
Sweltering Heatwave in Punjab: Potential Causes and Rainfall Outlook
The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) cites the persisting neutral ENSO phase and positive IOD as key factors influencing weather patterns in May. While near-normal rainfall is expected for most of Pakistan, some areas, including northern Punjab, may see slightly above average precipitation.
While daytime highs will likely remain slightly above normal in both northern and southern regions, central areas – encompassing most of Punjab and southern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – may experience normal to slightly below normal maximum temperatures. Interestingly, the PMD predicts warmer-than-usual minimum temperatures nationwide, with the most significant rise expected in northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir.
Heatwave : Impact and Precautions
The PMD highlights the potential benefits of above-normal May precipitation for Pakistan’s agriculture. However, precautions are necessary to safeguard maturing wheat crops during harvest from potential hailstorms and windstorms in specific regions. The department emphasizes the atmospheric conditions favoring heatwave development, particularly in southern Pakistan’s plains.
While anticipated high-altitude temperatures may accelerate snowmelt in northern areas, potentially increasing water availability for irrigation and power generation, residents in Punjab must prioritize staying cool during the impending heatwave.
